    Beyond The Beach Clubs

From hillside hideaways to beachside glamour, Jane Heywood discovers Mykonos is an island that works for everyone.

    Eden original

    Words by

“I thought I knew Mykonos. The reputation precedes it – beach clubs pulsing with music, party nights stretching until dawn, those Instagram-perfect windmills spinning against impossibly blue skies. All true. But over several days moving between 13 different properties, I discovered something more complex: Mykonos shape-shifts depending on where you rest your head. Choose Elia Beach and you’ll find Mediterranean calm. Pick a spot near Nammos and Scorpios and you’re in the thick of glamorous energy. The island doesn’t choose for you – it offers the full spectrum and lets you dial in your own frequency.

What united every property, every corner of this Cycladic gem, were the sunsets. They became my nightly ritual, something the island performs with unfailing drama. The sky would turn every imaginable shade – dusty pink bleeding into tangerine, deep coral melting into violet – as the sun dropped into the Aegean. And, with so many resorts perched at elevated positions, you get panoramic, cinematic views that feel extravagant in their beauty. Cocktail in hand, watching from whichever pool deck I’d claimed that evening, it never got old.

    Elia Beach: The Myconian Universe

I based myself at Myconian Villas on Elia Beach for three nights, and quickly understood why this stretch of coastline hosts six different Myconian Collection properties. The genius of the setup reveals itself within hours: you’re staying at one hotel but have access to all six – their pools, restaurants, bars, beaches – multiplying your options exponentially without needing to pack a bag.

    Myconian Villas

Myconian Villas surprised me with its understated quality. No pretension, no ceremony – just sea views from every angle and that rare commodity in resort life: genuine ease.

Large black sun loungers dotted the pool area in both sun and shade.

The atmosphere shifted with the light: mornings were quiet and contemplative; by late afternoon the restaurants would start to fill, voices rising with the sunset, cocktails appearing, and the buzz of evening beginning to hum.

    Myconian Imperial

Dinner at Myconian Imperial’s Sishu Sushi was one of those nights that stays with me for a very long time.

A spectacular setting overlooking the Aegean, the sky staging its nightly show while plates of impossibly fresh sashimi and precise sushi arrived.

The cocktails – spicy margaritas and pornstar martinis – matched the energy, and the whole room seemed to lean into the sunset together.

    Myconian Utopia

Scattered across Elia Beach, the other Myconian properties each carved out their own identity.

Myconian Utopia perches 300 feet up the hillside with views so dramatic you understand immediately why couples choose it for honeymoons.

The design makes bold choices – driftwood sculptures alongside sleek contemporary pieces, open-plan bathrooms with bathtubs in the bedroom – that demand a certain comfort level. The gym is tiny, the pool opens late, and the climb is steep. But those views are full-on conversation-stoppers.

    Panoptis Escape

At the very summit of the Elia hillside sits Panoptis Escape, less Greek island, more South African safari lodge in aesthetic: huge rooms filled with thoughtful details, dining spaces flooded with natural light, and an atmosphere that encourages retreat.

The wind gusts with real force up here, and the linen sheets have a more rustic weave – worth knowing for those who prefer crisp, high-thread-count softness, but for couples or groups taking over the entire property, it offers complete privacy.

    Myconian Sunrise

Myconian Sunrise, the collection’s newest property, sits directly on Agrari Beach’s powder-soft sand, separated from its siblings by a walk that requires fair warning: a nudist beach and a rocky cove “where gatherings of a certain nature take place,” as I was told.

Expect the unexpected. But arriving at Sunrise feels like reaching somewhere intimate and relaxed, with natural textures, simple furnishings, and the rhythm of beach life right outside the door.

DEOS – A Myconian Collection Hotel

Of all the Myconian properties, Deos was the one that stopped me in my tracks. Opened in 2024 and still carrying that new-hotel scent, it somehow manages to feel both luxurious and effortless at the same time.

And, just seven minutes’ walk from Mykonos Town, it balances access with calm. The pool deck delivers a sweeping panorama: Mykonos harbour on one side, cruise ships gliding past on the other.

Dinner at Epico Restaurant unfolded with quiet confidence – warm breads, Myconian cheese, zucchini cooked so simply it sang, veal cheeks pasta falling apart at the lightest touch, and Greek yoghurt with sour cherry and lemon-basil sorbet that felt like summer on a spoon. This is the Myconian Collection at its finest.

    Myconian Ambassador

Myconian Ambassador stakes its claim between Scorpios and Nammos, prime territory for those who want glamour on their doorstep.

Lunch at George’s Bar began with breads, olives, and, inevitably, another Greek salad – simple, sun-warmed perfection that reminded me how good the classics can be – no matter how many times you have them.

The blue-and-white palette is traditional, but the Thalasso Spa with its three indoor pools is world-class.

    Cali Mykonos

Cali operates in its very own league. Architecturally, it’s all soft stone, sand tones and clean lines, cascading down the hillside in a way that feels organic to its setting. Every villa has a heated pool, the main pool flows like a lazy river, and a small private beach is tucked away to the side. The Apollo Bar became my favourite sundowner spot – the kind of place you linger with a book or cards while the sun slips away. Staff asked my preferred pool temperature and turndown time on arrival – small gestures that elevated the entire experience.

At Avli restaurant, a melon and peach salad with prosciutto and gorgonzola stole the show – a perfect balance of sweet, salty and sharp that I’m still talking about today. From the private dock, boats carry guests to Nammos, Scorpios, and Spilia beach clubs, or out on half-day excursions. Families spread themselves out across the villas, with enough space for everyone to breathe while still being together – the kind of setup that makes multi-generational holidays actually work. And, although the hillside setting requires golf carts, for those who do make the climb, Cali delivers pure, unadulterated indulgence.

    Bill & Coo The Coast

Bill & Coo Suites sits just 10 minutes’ walk from Mykonos Town with 32 sea-view suites, some with private pools, and breakfasts punctuated by almond croissants that alone justify the stay.

But it’s The Coast, its sister property on Agios Ioannis Bay, that really stayed with me. Quietly sophisticated, there’s no fanfare on arrival, just views spilling toward the waves, while low-slung loungers, natural wood tones, and the hush of the sea created an atmosphere of effortless calm.

Beefbar here gave me the meal of the trip: avocado hummus, sun-warmed Greek salad, Black Angus fillet, cheese and truffle fries, and frosted fiesta margaritas. Beyond the food, it was the warmth of staff and the ease of beachside dining that made me slow down in a way only a holiday can.

    Kalesma

Kalesma was designed as a modern Myconian village, complete with nods to Apollo’s horses woven through its identity.

Close enough to town for convenience, far enough for calm, it offered that rare balance of high luxury with genuine relaxation.

Villas felt like private compounds; suites struck the perfect balance of intimacy and comfort and, as dusk fell, lanterns flickered to life across the whitewashed courtyards, and the whole place glowed with that serene, understated beauty Greece does so well.

    Mykonos Grand

Mykonos Grand emerged as the property that works for everyone – families, honeymooners, multi-gen groups – all seemed very much at home here.

The adults-only pool sits on the sand, the main pool is vast, and many rooms include two entrances, allowing late-night returns without disturbing others.

And the lobby view alone – straight to the Aegean – is an instant, breathtaking reminder of exactly where you are.

    Grace Mykonos

Grace Mykonos, freshly renovated in 2025, is all about convenience and location.

Perched above Agios Stefanos beach, it’s just five minutes from town and perfectly positioned near the new port – ideal for cruise passengers beginning or ending their journey, or for those prioritising proximity to the action over resort amenities.

That said, the compact pool area and cruise ship views mean it’s best suited to short stays rather than week-long resort experiences.

    The Verdict

What this time on Mykonos reinforced was the island’s essential adaptability; its real secret lies in understanding that location determines everything. Stay near Elia Beach for the Myconian constellation and its dining flexibility. Choose Myconian Ambassador for beach club proximity. Pick Mykonos Grand for all-rounder appeal. Select Cali for pure, unadulterated luxury. Or opt for Deos for the best of the Myconian Collection and its close-to-town walkability.

From the sunrise quiet of Ornos Bay to sunset over Agios Ioannis, Mykonos remains an island that allows me to find my own version of it. The wind keeps blowing – it is the island of the winds, after all. Those sunsets keep performing their nightly show. And the sky doesn’t discriminate based on which pool I’m watching from. That impartial beauty feels fitting for an island with this much range.
