    Table-top City

It has to be one of the world’s most beautiful cities. Sandwiched between iconic Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean, this enclave of European elegance combines a whole lot of history with a real sense of fun. Must-dos include the mountain itself of course, the fab beaches and bars of wealthy Camps Bay and Clifton and the revitalised and fashionable Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. The lively centre, around Long and Kloof Streets, is easily explored on foot to really take in the ambience as well as the colourful African crafts, eclectic restaurants, fascinating museums and world-class hotels.

    CAPE TOWN

    WHERE TO STAY

One&Only Cape Town – For Resort Realness

“This chic, urban retreat not only possesses an unbeatable location, steps from the handsome harbour and the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, it’s also home to some of Cape Town’s largest rooms. A super option for anyone needing a little more from their base, there are kids’ and teens’ activities, a fantastic selection of restaurants, a spa and a sizeable resort pool. The design and décor have all the distinctive One&Only touches, so it’s the views from your window – over Table Bay or the Marina – that give you a real sense of place.

Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel – A Nostalgic Icon

This blushing pink icon, set between the vibrant city and the slopes of Table Mountain, is a supreme stay for those seeking a slice of history and nostalgia. It may be the oldest hotel in Cape Town, but it offers an unsurpassable blend of leafy tranquillity and a contemporary buzz. There are two heated swimming pools, a children’s club, a feast of foodie venues and, being just minutes from Kloof Street, it’s easy to lose yourself amid the trendy boutiques and explore all this incredible city has to offer. Don’t miss the recently refurbished Planet Bar and its much-lauded Pink Lady Cocktail.

Kensington Place – Boutique & Chic

If you’re looking for something boutique, unique and oh-so chic, look no further than Kensington Place. In the greenhaven suburb of Higgovale, right at the top of Kloof Street, this hidden oasis serves up a clever combination of charm, impressive hospitality and peace. The gorgeous little garden – with world-renowned views of Table Mountain and the Mother City – is a divine spot for breakfast; the plunge pool makes it easy to cool off after a day exploring; and the staff is exceedingly friendly, helpful and more than happy to help with any aspect of your stay.

    THE SILO

    FOR THE WOW FACTOR

The Silo is out of this world so, if you really want a hotel to knock you right off your feet, then look no further! Set at the heart of the Waterfront, occupying the six floors above the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (the continent’s largest collection of contemporary African art), expect bold interiors, original artworks and 360-degree views from Table Mountain to Robben Island. More spacious vertically than horizontally, due to the atypical architecture and, in particular, the design of the pillowed floor-to-ceiling window bays that overlook Table Mountain, Lions Head, Signal Hill or the working harbour, the stylishly decorated suites are the epitome of modern opulence.

Elsewhere, guests can chill at the spa; work off the city’s fine-dining in the gym; or enjoy a guided tour of the hotel’s private art collection, followed by an indulgent Royal afternoon tea at The Granary Café (don’t be fooled by the venue’s name – it may sound casual, but the food and service here are exceptional!). The Silo’s rooftop is, without doubt, one of Cape Town’s finest rooftop terraces, and the most scenic spot for a swim, a casual lunch or a sunset cocktail… Our favourite? The Hugo – a refreshing blend of Hendricks gin, lime, basil, elderflower syrup, Méthode Cap Classique and cucumber. Even if you’re not staying here, this place is a top spot for sundowners and dinner!

    CAPE TOWN'S BEST BITS

The V&A Waterfront – the working harbour area, full of attractions and activities for every age, designer shops, street performers and Cape arts and crafts – is undoubtedly one of the city’s highlights. There are over 100 eateries here too; we particularly liked Pier’s intimate, multi-course fine-dining affair at the water’s edge; the Portuguese-influenced seafood cuisine at Baía; Harbour House – their fresh seafood with a gourmet spin is a firm favourite with locals and tourists; the tapas and eclectic Spanish-infused interiors at La Parada; and The Waterside – a sophisticated, but more casual menu that can be enjoyed both indoors or on the outdoor deck – superlative for sumptuous summer lunches.

Activity-wise, a trip up Table Mountain is not to be missed, but make sure it’s a clear day or you’ll miss out on those jaw-dropping views. Hire a stand-up paddle-board for a self-guided tour of the harbour, or book a kayak to explore the city’s shoreline. The Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is renowned as one of the world’s greatest and is definitely worth an afternoon visit with a picnic. The District 6 Museum is an incredibly thought-provoking experience and especially interesting for anyone wanting to learn more about Apartheid. Further afield, if you don’t have time to stay in The Winelands, we’d definitely recommend a bespoke private wine tour out there. And visiting the colony of African Penguins at Boulders Beach is a must – they sure know how to pull a crowd!

    THE ATLANTIC SEABOARD

    WHERE TO STAY

Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the rugged foothills of Table Mountain, the Atlantic Seaboard, or “Riviera” to the locals, is one of the most magnetic, diverse regions in the world. Home to Bantry Bay and Camps Bay, the air is clean and fresh, the ocean views will take your breath away and the people are so very warm and welcoming.

Ellerman House, Bantry Bay – For Something Special

Small and privately owned, in an exquisite location between Bantry Bay (one of the most exclusive bays in this area) and Camps Bay (the place to see and be seen in Cape Town), Ellerman House is incredibly special. The awe-inspiring Atlantic Ocean views are set against the dramatic backdrop of Lion’s Head. Clifton’s sheltered beaches are within walking distance. And local attractions like the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, Camps Bay and the V&A Waterfront are 10 minutes by car. Originally a private residence, the historic Cape Edwardian-style mansion features shaded verandas and indigenous terraced gardens overlooking the ocean, plus 13 individually decorated rooms and suites, complemented by two ultra-modern villas.

12 Apostles, Camps Bay – For Beachy Bliss

Nestled on the slopes of the Twelve Apostles Mountain Range, this
grand dame of the Atlantic Seaboard is synonymous with style and
romance. Just outside Camps Bay, its location is superb: far enough
from Cape Town’s hustle and bustle, with views over the Atlantic
and fynbos-covered mountains – both equally electrifying… So, you
get that away-from-it-all feeling, while being close enough to the
city for shopping or a night on the town. Spacious rooms and suites
are perfectly suited for couples and small families and there’s some
awesome kids’ entertainment, so little ones will be kept busy.

    CAMPS BAY BEST BITS

With its long stretch of fine white sand, natural rock pools and unmistakeable backdrop, Camps Bay is a dreamy beach town with oodles of atmosphere, high-end restaurants, rooftop cocktail bars, cafés, boutiques, a mall and a theatre.

Take an early morning walk along the Pipe Track, a gentle, mildly undulating walk that follows an old water pipe along the top of Camps Bay, or browse the African Craft Market. Head to the four enclaved beaches of Clifton (just five minutes away) – protected from the notorious South Easter wind – or Llandudno, best for arresting scenery, picnics, sun-bathing and sundowners.

Go all out and spoil yourself with a helicopter trip out to The Winelands for the day. And food-wise, you must try Camps Bay’s ‘Codfather Seafood and Sushi’ – super casual with a fab sushi train.”
