Planning Ahead – Your First Step to a Healthy Trip
Before you pack those bags and set off on your adventure, let’s talk about keeping you healthy along the way. Pop in to see your doctor or local travel clinic about 4-6 weeks before you leave. They’re your best friends for travel prep, with all the latest info on what you’ll need for your specific destination. Plus, they’ll make sure any vaccines are right for you personally, considering your own health story.
Essential Vaccines to Consider
If you’re heading to somewhere tropical or subtropical, you’ll want to think about hepatitis A and typhoid vaccines. It’s also a good time to check if your regular vaccines (like tetanus, polio, and TB) need a boost. Planning a longer stay or venturing off the beaten path? You might also want to chat about cholera, diphtheria, rabies, and Japanese encephalitis.
The Yellow Fever Situation
Here’s something interesting: even though yellow fever only happens in parts of Central and South America and Sub-Saharan Africa, lots of countries want to see proof of vaccination. Why? This mosquito-spread virus (courtesy of our friend the Aedes aegypti, who likes to bite during the day) is taken pretty seriously worldwide. The vaccine does double duty – it keeps you safe and helps prevent the disease from spreading to new places where it could potentially thrive.
Navigating Covid-19 Today
Good news! Most places have relaxed their Covid-19 rules – you usually don’t need to show vaccine proof or test results anymore. While most destinations have dropped social distancing and mandatory masks, you’ll still see plenty of people masking up in many Asian cities. Your travel specialist can fill you in on any specific rules for where you’re headed.
Let’s Talk About Malaria
Malaria is still a concern in many tropical and subtropical spots. This troublemaker is spread by the Anopheles mosquito, which typically comes out after sunset. Since there’s no vaccine yet, you’ll need to be smart about avoiding mosquito bites – no antimalarial is 100% perfect. Have a good chat with your doctor about which antimalarial might be right for you, as some can have side effects or might not play nice with certain health conditions. Be sure to tell them everywhere you’re planning to visit, and stick to the schedule they give you for taking the pills – even after you’re back home.
Other Mosquito-Borne Visitors to Know About
Zika Virus
This one’s spread by day-biting Aedes mosquitoes. While most people barely notice they have it, it’s a big deal if you’re pregnant or planning to be, as it’s linked to birth defects like microcephaly. Since there’s no treatment or vaccine yet, if you’re expecting or hoping to be soon, it’s best to skip areas with moderate to high Zika risk.
Dengue and Chikungunya Fevers
These fellows (also spread by those daytime-active Aedes mosquitoes) can range from barely noticeable to pretty rough in rare cases. In fact, dengue often turns out to be the culprit when travelers come home with mysterious fevers from tropical trips.
