San Francisco's charm lies in its unique combination of abundant attractions and compact geography, spanning just 49 square miles, making it super easy to experience a great deal in a relatively short amount of time. Naturally, the iconic Golden Gate Bridge is a must-visit, as is taking a cruise to Alcatraz Island, endearingly referred to as 'The Rock'. Instead of devoting all your time to the tourist-heavy Fisherman's Wharf though, consider delving into the more genuine aspects of San Francisco: explore the eclectic Mission District, the lively Castro and historic Chinatown, or take a leisurely stroll through the Golden Gate Park – a haven for recreation, home to two major museums, over 20 sports facilities, botanical gardens and much more.

Napa Valley is composed of the city of Napa along with seven quaint towns: Calistoga, St. Helena, Rutherford, Oakville, Yountville, Lake Berryessa and American Canyon. Each offers its own unique allure, with a wealth of wineries, eateries, and boutiques to explore. Napa city boasts a rich history that stretches back to the 1800s. Calistoga is renowned for its mineral-rich geothermal hot springs, celebrated for their soothing properties. St Helena hosts an array of top-tier wineries, vibrant arts scene and gastronomic delights. Rutherford and Oakville are esteemed for their prime vineyard sites. Meanwhile, Yountville has gained acclaim for its world-class dining establishments and decorated chefs, garnering the moniker 'Culinary Capital of Napa Valley'. Lake Berryessa, one of California's largest freshwater bodies, is a sanctuary for fishermen, hikers, swimmers and those who simply wish to enjoy the stunning scenery. Meanwhile, American Canyon is an emerging area featuring rising restaurants and new hotels catering to the Napa region, along with a distinctive wetland preserve for bird watchers and picturesque walking paths.

This expansive freshwater lake straddles the border of California and Nevada and is recognised as the second deepest lake in the United States; its vibrant blues and greens mirroring the big skies above. Long before the arrival of the first white Americans in 1844, Lake Tahoe served as a sacred summer gathering site for various tribes of the peaceful Washoe Nation. The area's traditional name, Da-ow-a-ga, which means "edge of the lake," was later anglicised to Tahoe. Shortly after Kit Carson and John Fremont reached the Lake, silver was found in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, attracting hordes of fortune seekers. By the century's end, luxury hotels were serving San Francisco's elite and the mid-1940s saw the opening of the area's initial gambling establishments. The 1960 Winter Olympics firmly established Lake Tahoe as one of the USA's foremost ski resorts and remarkably, the awe-inspiring beauty and pioneer charm of the Lake has been maintained to this day, despite the tremendous development of the last 150 years. Along with excellent modern amenities and exceptional outdoor activities, Lake Tahoe still offers the calm, peace and beauty that so inspired the Washoe and all who have made the journey here since.

The enchanting natural beauty of Yosemite's glacier-carved valleys initially motivated the US government to conserve and safeguard its wilderness areas. Nestled in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, the park attracts millions of visitors annually who flock here to witness the park's towering granite cliffs, cascading waterfalls, pristine freshwater lakes and venerable sequoia trees. It's also renowned as a hiker's paradise, with a multitude of trails of various lengths and difficulties that meander through Yosemite Valley – the park's central attraction – and its surroundings. While these trails can be navigated independently, joining a guided tour can enrich your experience with knowledge of the local history, geology and wildlife. For those seeking more of a rush of excitement, rock climbing is also available. Alternatively, self-driving through the park, to sites like the serpentine ascent to Glacier Point, showcases the immense expanse of Yosemite.

Big Sur is a stunning expanse of California's central coastline situated just south of Carmel. Rather than a town, it is a region defined by the Santa Lucia Mountains to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west and is famed for the scenic Pacific Coast Highway 1, characterised by its serpentine turns, sheer seaside cliffs and vistas of untamed shoreline. The region, known for its sparse population, boasts several quaint communities perfect for a lunch stop, beautiful beaches that offer serene relaxation and a multitude of state parks that are ideal for hiking enthusiasts. While it's possible to drive through Big Sur in just a few hours, it's much more rewarding to take your time, soak in the scenery and really savour the experience. So, for those wishing to extend their stay, there are various accommodation options available, or just make use of the numerous lookout points and rest areas to punctuate your journey.
