To truly get under LA’s skin, be sure to explore as many of its diverse neighbourhoods as you can: from downtown’s vital creative scene, the thriving design district of Culver City and the back-lots of Burbank; to Mid-City’s museums, Silver Lake (America’s most hipster neighbourhood) and the retail hot-spots of Beverly Hills, Melrose, La Brea, the Farmers Market and The Grove. Add to that the cultural mecca of West Hollywood and Hollywood Boulevard (touristy by day but sizzling come nightfall thanks to its high-design hotels and high-octane clubs) and you’ve everything you need to set the scene for your own LA story.

Consider yourself warned – Santa Barbara has wanderlust written all over it. And, once you set foot in this fair city, you’ll want to come back time and time again. Not only will you find sandy beaches and year-round, Mediterranean-style weather (hence it’s other moniker, The American Riviera), but also artisanal restaurants, wine-tasting rooms, award-winning craft breweries, distilleries in renovated warehouses, downtown boutiques and tucked-away galleries, not to mention a generous dose of culture and the famed Urban Wine Trail.

On the southern side of Monterey Peninsula, the artistic enclave of Carmel-by-the-Sea boasts a storied past, streets dotted with galleries and inviting gastropubs. Its Mission ranks among California's most picturesque, surrounded by shady paths leading into the verdant Mission Trail Nature Preserve. Moreover, the scenic Carmel Beach and the diverse landscape of meadows, rugged bluffs and sculpted trees at the adjacent Point Lobos State Reserve definitely merit a visit.

A sky-rocketing crimson bridge, classic cable cars, a sparkling bay and ‘painted-lady’-lined streets – San Francisco is undeniably a city that has to be seen to be believed. Located along the Northern California coast, it’s a town that gives you goosebumps one minute and warms you to your core the next. In part, that’s down to its eclectic neighbourhoods, abundance of natural highs, family fun, world-renowned museums and performing arts and trend-setting eateries (from Michelin-starred dining to outrageous food trucks); but it’s also due to the micro climates (meaning varied weather patterns between neighbourhoods, sometimes even from block to block).

Stand in Yosemite Valley, turn 360 degrees, and in just 60 seconds you’ll see more natural wonders than you would in a whole day pretty much anywhere else in the world. From black bears, mule deer and chipmunks; white-flowering dogwood trees and the Merced River; to countless waterfalls (including the mighty Yosemite, Bridalveil and Sentinel Falls), the impressive rock formations of El Capitan and Half Dome and more adventure and activities than you can imagine, you’ll find it all here.

Death Valley is no Disneyland, but it's a magical kingdom all of its own. It's the largest national park outside of Alaska at 3.3 million acres – home to mountainous sand dunes, mysterious singing rocks, colourful sandstone canyons and bizzarely shaped Joshua Trees – where extremes are the norm: from its climate (it's the hottest, driest place in the States, with summer temperatures that are, quite simply, scorching, and an average rainfall of just 2cm each year), to its elevations (its lowest spot Badwater Basin, sits at 282 feet below sea level, while its highest point, Telescope Peak, soars to an impressive 11,049 feet).

With so much to see and do in Sin City, it’s hard to know where to start, so let us point you in the right direction to make sure your stay here is super special. But, if you’re more limited to time, the best way to see it all is from a helicopter, for a bird’s-eye view of the Strip, its casinos and further afield, the Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon.

With Greater Palm Springs' year-round sunshine, championship golf courses, sleek luxury lodgings, hot restaurants, hip nightlife and fabulous shopping, it's no wonder that Hollywood's Elite escape to the desert resort towns of Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta and Indio, or Desert Hot Springs to the north.
