Marrakech. Even the name conjures up a world full of colour, sights, sounds and scents that feel a million miles from home. After a few days delving deep into the best of the Red City’s most remarkable hotels, Travel Director, Jo Gallimore, found herself absolutely head over heels…

    MARRAKECH

    MOROCCO

Marrakech, nestled at the base of the Atlas Mountains, offers an enchanting atmosphere with its vibrant medina. Within the ancient walls, you can discover stalls adorned with exquisite antique rugs and ornate silverware, alongside boutique spas that deliver the ultimate in authentic and luxurious hammam experiences. Head out of Marrkech, venturing through olive groves to the snow-dusted peaks of the Atlas Mountains, and enjoy an intriguing exploration of  the secluded Berber villages. Then retreat to your exquisitely furnished hotel awaits for a spot of serenity amongst the Red City’s hustle and bustle.

    ROYAL MANSOUR

    HOTEL REVIEW

“First stop, Royal Mansour… A stunning reimagining of a traditional medina – constructed predominantly by artisans – and an awesome all-round option for couples and families.

The 53 opulently spacious riads, each completely unique, are accessed from the hotel’s many walkways, all beautifully bordered by gardens, olive, palm and orange trees. All have butler service (who use the ingenious underground tunnels to take care of guests with the utmost discretion), cutting-edge technology, an interior courtyard and a private roof terrace and plunge pool. Larger options have a Bedouin tent, open fire and private hammam, while four Prestige Riads have a lift for anyone who may find the two flights of stairs somewhat challenging.

Highlights… The three-level spa, which marries innovation with tradition within its tempting tailor-made treatments. The kids’ club with activities galore for 4-10-year-olds. Signature workshops offering all sorts of memory-making experiences. And, of the four restaurants, the three fine-dining venues, overseen by two, three-Michelin-star Chefs, Yannick Alléno (La Grande Table Marocaine and Le Jardin) and Massimiliano Alajmo (Sesamo). You can also be served in your private riad, at any time of day.

    AMANJENA

    HOTEL REVIEW

Amanjena was, interestingly, the only hotel not offering public day passes, keeping everything extra private for guests. It’s a more tranquil affair, too. The spacious, standalone Pavilions and Maisons are cool, elegant dwellings with Berber carpets, tiled floors, lofty ceilings and private gardens (and many, a private pool). That being said, there’s tennis on-site, a serene spa, a neighbouring 27-hole golf course, excursions galore and lots of child-friendly fun, including a daily activity hub during school holidays and multiple interconnecting accommodation options.

Highlight… Nama – an artfully plated celebration of Japan’s UNESCO-protected washoku cuisine, open Wednesday to Sunday.

    LA MAMOUNA

    HOTEL REVIEW

And finally, La Mamounia, looking fabulous after a recent refurb and celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The arrival is a real assault on the senses, as you’re immediately hit by the hotel’s signature Maison Fragonnard scent and the rich colours in reception, before being ushered off to check-in over dates and a glass of almond milk, all served on a silver platter.

Outside, 17 acres of lush gardens are gorgeous; ditto the spa’s lantern-lit maze of treatment rooms. There’s a sizeable outdoor heated pool and a kids’ pool, a poolside ice-cream stand and two movie showings a day, including freshly made popcorn. Inside the detail is incredible too: from the corridors – a reproduction of the Medina’s narrow streets – to the amazing architecture, Moroccan tiles, carved wooden doors and tempting textures.

Highlights… The cranberry croissants at breakfast; cocktails at Le Majorelle (I LOVED the atmosphere and live band); and Le Marocain, with its intimate, riad-style setting and classic Red City cuisine… an excellent spot for a more romantic evening.”

    HIGHLIGHTS OF MARRAKECH

Bahia Palace – Beautiful and though quite busy, there was something very serene about the place.

Saadian Tombs – Very interesting but busy and we didn’t bother queuing for the main tomb.

Old Medina & Markets – Incredible. Fabulous atmosphere, colours, noises, aromas and lovely, friendly people.

Majorelle Garden – Beautiful, relaxing gardens and an interesting Berber Museum.

YSL Museum We only had a whirlwind tour, but it was absolutely wonderful to see the collection of striking outfits and jewellery here.

    Highlights of the Atlas Mountains

Probably our favourite day trip; the scenery is fantastic and very dramatic. We loved visiting one of the Berber dwellings (although like everywhere that day, the hard sell to buy something did get a little wearing). We also enjoyed the guided waterfall walk (though, after Iguassu, it was a little underwhelming for me and, with tourist numbers on the rise, the climb was more procession-like than leisurely).

Lunch at Kasbah Bab Ourika was fantastic. This is an incredible hotel in the middle of nowhere with dramatic views. It’s an oasis of calm, but a slow and tortuous drive from the busiest market we’ve ever seen at the foot of the mountains and the good food and delightful gardens here made for a really pleasant, relaxing afternoon. This trip culminated in a fun evening (an incredible atmosphere, very noisy, busy and fast-moving) with great Moroccan food and a belly-dancing performance (which started out a little underwhelmingly but warmed up into an absolutely amazing show).”
