    Riviera Style

With, unsurprisingly, absolutely no arm-twisting whatsoever, Louise Furniss travelled to the South of France to explore the enchanting seaside villages of Èze and Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat on France’s über-chic Côte d’Azur and the super-rich, super-glamorous Principality of Monaco. Here’s what she thought…

    ÈZE VILLAGE

“Èze is a beautiful little village of quaint, narrow passages and medieval houses, full of flowers and totally charming. I absolutely loved the 50-minute stroll down the hill to Èze-sur-Mer (one of the loveliest beaches in the French Riviera) – the views were spectacular, but make sure you wear suitable walking shoes!

We had lunch at gourmet restaurant La Chèvre d’Or and were smitten, both with the restaurant and with Èze itself… I’m pretty sure everyone must feel the same way the first time they visit. I’d definitely recommend staying at Château de la Chèvre d’Or. The rooms, the pools and the many dining areas all have remarkable views. And the staff both in the hotel and the restaurant were all so nice. It’s such a beautiful place, you could easily become permanently mesmerised by the incredible scenery below. It’s very special indeed. And awfully hard to leave.

    SAINT-JEAN-CAP-FERRAT

But leave we did, for Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, a charming former fishing village in an exceptionally unspoiled green spot, and the iconic Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, A Four Seasons Hotel… the town’s most exclusive hotel, perched on a bluff overlooking the Med.

Discreet and oh-so luxurious, it’s surprisingly laid-back and, even at full occupancy, doesn’t feel overcrowded. I’m sure that’s down to the vast grounds, spectacular views and the beach club, accessed by funicular.

The rooms, on the other hand, aren’t so big, so opt for one in La Résidence wing, which has larger rooms, a large balcony and some a private pool.

Meanwhile, Hôtel Royal Riviera is Cap Ferrat’s most popular hotel. Again, space is at a premium, so the grounds are quite compact, but there’s a great atmosphere, it’s super-popular with families, with its large pool and a small but perfectly formed beach at the front of the hotel (which is also a great spot for an evening stroll).

    MONACO

And finally, to Monaco, a place I absolutely love, but haven’t visited in 20 years. It’s everything you imagine it to be and more… and on a whole other level. From the balmy Mediterranean climate and scenic walks, to the multi-million-pound yachts lining the harbour, the world’s most famous casino, one of THE sporting events of the year, beach clubs galore (including the original and best, Nikki Beach Monaco), this place ticks all the right ‘see and be seen’ boxes.

It’s a natural mecca for gourmet cuisine too, with everything from three-Michelin-star restaurants, to the Buddha Bar and the world-famous Café de Paris – ideal for a spot of people-watching.

There’s legendary designer shopping and all sorts of not-to-be-missed cultural highlights, so it’s a fantastic place for a three- or four-night break for couples or trips away with the girls (or boys!), and is easily twinned with another area like Èze or Saint-Jean- Cap-Ferrat as they are all super close.

All in all, an absolutely fabulous trip!!”
