    THE HOTEL REPORT

Dazzling white beaches, tumbling waterfalls, pristine rainforest and the lush Grand Etang National Park – the spice isle of Grenada is pretty special…

Covered in wild volcanic scenery and scattered with lush nutmeg, ginger and cinnamon plantations, this is a tropical haven without all the glitz and glamour of many of its neighbours.

Instead, this peaceful destination relies on its natural attributes to lure its guests. And our three featured resorts are just as distinctive, as EDEN Travel Director, Tara Lloyd, discovered on her recent recce.

    SILVERSANDS

    HOTEL REPORT

“Just walking into Silversands at the northern end of Grand Anse Beach will take your breath away. Lavishly detailed, technologically savvy and sleeker than sleek, I can’t ever recall seeing another hotel like this anywhere in the Caribbean. In fact, if I’d been blindfolded after my airport pick-up in the head-turning Tesla (the only one on the island) I could’ve sworn I’d landed somewhere in Asia.

It’s the style that makes Silversands so completely unique and it’s easy to see why it attracts a slightly younger, design-conscious crowd than the more conventional choices. But the design isn’t its only wow-factor. You’ll spot another one – the 330-foot infinity pool (the longest in the Caribbean) – as soon as you arrive.

Accommodation is just as easy on the eye… Light, bright and white, with a natural wood and stone aesthetic and floor-to-ceiling windows that brilliantly showcase the gorgeous outlooks (most of which are outstanding ocean views).

But it’s the four-bedroom beachfront villas where the wow-factor really comes into its own and, when I was shown to mine, (how lucky am I?!), I was absolutely blown away by the sheer vastness.

Made up of two ocean view and two garden rooms, tons of living space inside and out plus a private infinity pool and direct beach access, they are exceptional for families (as are the three-bedroom hillside villas), especially as each individual bedroom is standalone, so you all get to enjoy each other’s company and have a little space to call your own too!

And that’s before you get to enjoy the resort’s exceptional experiences… From the fabulous Silversands Spa for all your pampering needs (my highlight was the ice cave – so soothing if you get a spot of sunburn); to the awesome wining and dining options: Asiatique (Asian classics spiked with Grenadian spices – the Bang Bang Shrimp and Miso Mahi Mahi were amazing); the Grenadian Grill; and swanky cigar and rum bar, Pure. And I loved that most of the produce used here is sourced from the Grenada Network of Rural Women Producers.

Then there’s the beach – a gorgeous mile-and-a-half stretch of soft sand which, though public, is more than likely to be peaceful; its generally calm waters making it ideal for swimming.

Five minutes’ stroll along the sands brings you to a craft market and a clutch of often lively beach bars and you’re in walking distance of Grand Anse’s restaurants and shops too.

    CALABASH HOTEL

    HOTEL REPORT

Calabash, meanwhile, is nicely secluded away from the hustle and bustle, sheltered by the palms of L’Anse aux Epines beach.

Owned and run by the gregarious Garbutt family, it’s a relatively small resort, but the intimate, relaxed and friendly atmosphere is absolutely unbeatable; as are the staff who make Calabash completely stand out from its Caribbean counterparts – they’re so attentive – anticipatory rather than reactive – nothing is too much trouble and they make your entire stay such an incredibly memorable experience.

At the pool, the beach (which at times I had completely to myself), in the restaurants and at any other time, everyone was incredibly welcoming and friendly. You feel so chilled as soon as you arrive!

And then there’s the food. As outstanding as the service, it all starts with breakfast – taken on your balcony or at the Beach Club. Tapas-style bites at the Beach Club form the basis of lunch: fresh, tasty fare and all of it – from the chicken roti to the salads and shrimp tacos – excellent.

By night, the dinner-only Rhodes Restaurant does have a dress code (but the fine-dining there is definitely worth getting glammed-up for). There’s so much choice too, and I highly recommend the calamari gnocchi and the seared shrimp starter.

Another highlight is the spa, not necessarily anything special to look at, but the massage was one of the best I’ve had to date. It’s right next to the pool too so you can go for a dip straight after your treatment.

    SPICE ISLAND BEACH RESORT

    HOTEL REPORT

Beautifully boutique Spice Island Beach Resort (one of the island’s oldest hotels), meanwhile, is all about location; the calm, crystal-clear waters of breathtaking Grand Anse Beach just steps beyond your contemporary Caribbean-style bungalow.

When it came to the accommodation here, I really liked the Saffron and Cinnamon Suites (they’re more like villas) due to their setting directly on the beach – ideal if you want an early morning dip or to feast your eyes on the fiery shades of the sunsets. They also come with complimentary round-trip airport transfers and exclusive access to a dedicated Special Services Coordinator.

Or there are the Seagrape Beach Suites – also, as the name suggests, on the beach and a little friendlier on the pocket. Prefer a pool over the beach and don’t require a sea view? A pool suite will be perfect – they come with a little extra privacy too so are especially awesome for honeymooners.

There’s definitely a more grown-up, formal feel here, particularly at Oliver’s – a smart (if not a little dated) restaurant set alongside the sea, where you can enjoy a mix of authentic local specialties, Creole and international cuisine. Or, for something a little more casual, try the toes-in-the-sand vibe of the Sea and Surf Terrace and Bar.

The perfect all-inclusive luxury experience here does make it tempting to spend every minute in resort to take advantage of the blissful beach, beachfront yoga pavilion, Janissa’s Spa and peaceful main pool and, if you do, then you’ll be properly pampered by an awesome team whose ultimate goal is to make every second very special indeed.
