Calabash, meanwhile, is nicely secluded away from the hustle and bustle, sheltered by the palms of L’Anse aux Epines beach.
Owned and run by the gregarious Garbutt family, it’s a relatively small resort, but the intimate, relaxed and friendly atmosphere is absolutely unbeatable; as are the staff who make Calabash completely stand out from its Caribbean counterparts – they’re so attentive – anticipatory rather than reactive – nothing is too much trouble and they make your entire stay such an incredibly memorable experience.
At the pool, the beach (which at times I had completely to myself), in the restaurants and at any other time, everyone was incredibly welcoming and friendly. You feel so chilled as soon as you arrive!
And then there’s the food. As outstanding as the service, it all starts with breakfast – taken on your balcony or at the Beach Club. Tapas-style bites at the Beach Club form the basis of lunch: fresh, tasty fare and all of it – from the chicken roti to the salads and shrimp tacos – excellent.
By night, the dinner-only Rhodes Restaurant does have a dress code (but the fine-dining there is definitely worth getting glammed-up for). There’s so much choice too, and I highly recommend the calamari gnocchi and the seared shrimp starter.
Another highlight is the spa, not necessarily anything special to look at, but the massage was one of the best I’ve had to date. It’s right next to the pool too so you can go for a dip straight after your treatment.
