Auckland – ‘City of Sails’ – is regularly voted one of the best lifestyle cities in the world. Set on the shores of the Waitemata Harbour, the Maori name for ‘sparkling waters’ , the city boasts marine reserves, golden swimming beaches and black sand surf. As New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland has a diverse ethnic mix providing myriad cultural experiences, reflected in the Pacific atmosphere and cuisine.

A world-renowned collection of 144 islands bobbing in the crystal waters of the Pacific, beautiful Bay of Islands is dotted along the eastern coast of Northland, where you can witness unbelievable marine wildlife and natural beauty, either sailing, diving or walking along one of the stunning beaches. It’s the perfect setting in which to get active, whether it’s deep-sea- or land-fishing, or just playing a superb round of golf at Kauri Cliffs course: ranked among the world’s top 100.

The ‘trout fishing capital of New Zealand’, set on the shores of New Zealand’s largest lake, Taupo also offers awe-inspiring panoramic views of the diverse volcanic landscape, from the pristine lake to the surrounding mountain peaks of Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe.

Hawkes Bay is the perfect destination if you want your trip to include a healthy bit of relaxation in the company of some fine vintage wines. Enjoy the food, the wine, the music and that famous Kiwi hospitality, safe in the knowledge that another healthy day of exploration awaits. Those interested in architecture will enjoy Napier, Art Deco capital of the world (and real enthusiasts should time their visit for February, when the town celebrates Art Deco Weekend).

‘City of Sunshine’ Nelson is a haven for artisans seeking a creative lifestyle amidst mountains, valleys, unspoilt shores and national parks. Its Saturday market showcases the best of the local craft scene, or visit the art studios and galleries any day of the week, in between Mapua and Motueka’s cafés and wineries. Adventure runs the gamut from cruises, kayaking or hikes at Abel Tasman National Park; rock-climbing and quad-biking at Golden Bay, and Takaka limestone cliffs.

The unique landscape of Banks Peninsula consists of exposed contours and complex coastline – breathtakingly dramatic, yet largely undiscovered. The peninsula is named after Sir Joseph Banks, the renowned botanist on board the Endeavour when Captain Cook made his first circumnavigation of New Zealand in 1770, and a large number of New Zealand’s unique bird and plant species can be seen at Annandale and in the surrounding area. Explore Pigeon Bay and the surrounding waters of Banks Peninsula on a private powerboat cruise and view friendly hector dolphins, fur seals in their natural habitat, bird colonies around the coastline and other wildlife. It’s also an excellent vantage point to see the fascinating volcanic topography and geology that created the Banks Peninsula millions of years ago.

If it’s adventure you’re after, there's no better destination than Queenstown, dubbed the adventure capital of the world. Starting off at the very sedate end of the activity spectrum with four golf courses enjoying the backdrop of rugged mountains, you can move on to bungee-jumping, sky-diving, heli-surfing, river-surfing, rock-climbing, canyoning and white-water rafting. And, for those of a less adrenaline-fuelled disposition, there are some great dining and shopping opportunities to be had.

Your helicopter flight to Glenorchy will take you through the grandeur of the Alps over rainforests, frozen lakes, ice capped mountains and majestic Milford to the rugged West Coast with its ancient forest of trees and ferns. Here you will have the opportunity to view seals in their natural colonies before landing at a remote West Coast beach. The helicopter then ascends into the mountains to touchdown on an age old glacier. The views are overwhelming, with their many crevasses and blue and green ice falls.
