Ranthambore is famous for its tigers – in fact, the Maharajas used to hunt them in the reserve – and staying at Vanyavilas feels just how we imagine a royal hunting party would have, dining in the royal lodge and sleeping in royal tents, all with free-standing roll-top baths, finely embroidered canopies, four-posters and outside decks for contemplating tiger sightings. (Tents? More like top hotel suites with canvas roofs!) The resort is picture-perfect; with fruit-bearing trees and a meandering watercourse; and there are animals everywhere, too... Elephants on friezes, peacocks on murals and tigers on silk walls. Our favourite though was Lakshmi, the hotel’s resident elephant, who you can meet and feed on her daily walkabout.
