San José's cultural attractions are nestled in a compact area of the downtown, making it convenient to explore the city's vibe in just one day. Situated on Avenida Central, a street that's ideal for discovering points of interest, the Plaza de la Cultura stands as both the cultural and physical heart of the city. Begin your journey here at this renowned pedestrian plaza, perfect for people-watching. Enjoy a snack from a local vendor and observe as the city bursts into motion. Perched atop the The Plaza de la Cultura is the Museum of Pre-Columbian Gold; while adjacent to the it's southern edge is the National Theatre (Teatro Nacional), Costa Rica's architectural jewel. Inaugurated in 1897, the National Theatre's design was inspired by the Paris Opera House and is a fine example of neoclassical architecture.

Often overlooked, Costa Rica's Caribbean Coast is a hidden gem characterised by warm waters, bright sunshine, swaying palms, spicy cuisine and a distinctive Afro-Caribbean culture set amidst untouched rainforests. There's a relaxed vibe, a mild climate and the region is absolutely teeming with wildlife. The Caribbean slopes of the Talamanca Mountains shelter elusive and endangered mammals like pumas, ocelots and tayras while, in the secluded Tortuguero National Park, unique birds, reptiles and amphibians flourish. Renowned for its sea turtle nesting sites, this remote paradise is only reachable by boat or plane, but the journey is absolutely worth it.
