Why Stay?

Portella takes its name, and its address, from the old gate beside Palma's Arab Baths – and the house keeps that same long relationship with time.

The 17th-century manor, Moorish in one detail and Baroque in the next, has been rebuilt in mud, stone, iron and wood by Mallorcan craftsmen working to a single belief: that good materials should be left to age into something better. Nothing here is trying to look new.

There are just 14 rooms, gathered around a planted courtyard where the noise of the city drops away to nothing. The best of them are named for what they see – the Santa Clara convent, the Arab Baths, Portella street below – and finished in the patina the restoration set out to earn: cane and dark wood, terracotta underfoot, a bowl of oranges catching the light on a marble shelf.
