LUX* Belle Mare

Arriving by boat, I was immediately struck by the mesmerising ocean vista that greets you on arrival at LUX* Belle Mare. The sprawling grounds, dotted with white two-storey buildings reminiscent of a bygone era, are a verdant paradise, while the beach, a vast expanse of soft sand, has something for everyone, with its wind-friendly kiting area and sheltered cove for those seeking a little more tranquillity.

Its swimming pool (the largest in Mauritius), is a real focal point that beckons guests to while away sun-drenched afternoons. But beyond all the relaxation, the resort also offers a plethora of activities. From the kids’ club and games room to watersports and the quirky ‘junk art’ room, boredom is not a word that appears in LUX*’s vocabulary.

The spa, infused with LUX*’S  signature orange scent, is a sanctuary of wellness, complete with a bridal suite for a spot of pre-wedding pampering. And the culinary offerings are nothing short of extraordinary, from the trendy Beach Rouge to the chic Duck Laundry and mouthwatering, Indian-inspired Amari.

Accommodation here ranges from spacious Junior Suites to opulent villas with private beach access. For those seeking a more cosmopolitan vibe, LUX* Grand Baie delivers in spades.

Accommodation here is sleek and tech-forward. The Junior Suites, while spacious, feature lighting controlled by touch devices – a detail that may divide opinion; but, for the ultimate indulgence, the two-bedroom LUX* Villa comes with its own dedicated butler/chef and a private pool. A word of caution though: the residences, whilst luxurious, are set across the road and lack sea views – something to remember when you’re booking your stay.

With its St Tropez-esque atmosphere, this property is tailor-made for the Instagram generation too. Red- and white-striped loungers dot the beach, while the rooftop Bisou offers panoramic views: the perfect backdrop for that envy-inducing selfie.

Restaurant-wise, the ultra-stylish Akisu serves up Japanese cuisine par excellence, whilst the cold room at breakfast is a veritable work of art. All-day dining venue, Beach Rouge, transforms from a bustling breakfast spot to a chic beachfront restaurant as the day progresses.

Fitness enthusiasts will revel in the state-of-the-art gym, complete with a dark, music-filled spin room and equipment favoured by Premier League footballers and the rooftop Muscle Beach gym – an additional outdoor workout space with unparalleled ocean views.

LUX* Le Morne

If it’s natural drama you’re after, LUX* Le Morne has you covered. Sitting in the shadow of the awe-inspiring Le Morne mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the resort’s rooms, while simple in design, offer a Polynesian-style beach hut feel that perfectly complements the surroundings, and the expansive private beach creates an atmosphere of laid-back luxury.

Dining options include East, with its epic ocean views and The Kitchen, which offers glorious glimpses of Le Morne when seated strategically; or, for a truly unique experience, indulge in a private, customised breakfast, perched in the Indian Almond tree by the seashore – the dreamiest spot on LUX* Le Morne’s beach

LUX* Grand Gaube exudes a retro-chic vibe that’s utterly captivating. Encapsulated by water, this sprawling resort offers views of the surrounding islands and a sense of calm that’s perfect for couples seeking a tranquil escape.

Housed in small, two-level structures, accommodation offers a surprising amount of space and privacy, while the adult-only area, featuring Wellness Junior Suites overlooking the lagoon, is ideal for those seeking a more secluded stay.

The culinary offerings here are particularly noteworthy. INTI, the Peruvian restaurant, is ranked fourth-best in Africa and is top in Mauritius. Bodrum Blue, with its Turkish-inspired menu and lagoon views, is not to be missed; and the Creole Smokehouse, nestled in a wooded area with drooping branches and twinkling lights, promises a magical dining experience. For rainy days the large, chic cinema room is a welcome addition.
