THE DELIGHTS OF ST. NICOLAS BAY

Nestled just off the main road from Agios Nikolaos, St. Nicolas Bay Resort Hotel & Villas is a charming Greek retreat that offers the perfect blend of tranquillity and accessibility.

Arriving at the resort, it feels more like stepping back in time into a traditional Cretan village – a celebration of Grecian charm with vibrant splashes of colour, where cobblestone pathways are surrounded by lush, bougainvillea-lined gardens, fragrant lemon trees and cool olive groves. Local architecture has been given a thoroughly modern twist, resulting in striking interiors and multi-tiered terraces lead down to the dazzling pools, lush, landscaped grounds and sun-kissed private beach.

Two things really struck me on arrival. The first was that there are two separate reception areas – one for arrivals, and another for departures – which I thought was a really thoughtful touch, and the cosy alcoves dotted around the lobby made the check-in experience a whole lot more relaxing. The other was that, while the commanding cliffside setting overlooking the glittering Mirabello Gulf is absolutely spectacular, it could prove somewhat tricky to get around for those with small children or anyone that’s not too steady on their feet (though there are buggies for anyone who needs a little assistance).

    Rooms for Every Taste

While some rooms may benefit from a minor touch-up, and most of the balcony rooms surprisingly lack sunbeds, overall the choice of accommodation here is excellent.

Clustered in separate low-rise buildings across the resort, there’s everything from double rooms with private verandas, multi-room Family Suites with shaded terraces and Club Suites with private pools, to the outstanding Olives and Sea Suites and the particularly enticing three-bedroom, two-storey Olives and Sea Villa.

Immersed in a sea of olive trees, more contemporary in style, and with impeccable views over Mirabello Bay, these secluded residences are ideal for families and couples alike, with light, airy spaces, cosy living areas inside and out and private heated seawater pools for the ultimate indulgence.

    Dining Delights

The dining experiences at St. Nicolas Bay are just as varied and impressive as the accommodation. Breakfast at the Clubhouse is a lavish affair, elegantly served with panoramic sea views alongside one of the inviting pools.

For pre-dinner drinks, the Bonatsa Bar and Veranda offer a perfect spot to unwind, and maybe even indulge in a game of UNO with the kids while enjoying the stunning vistas from these, the hotel’s best vantage points.

And The Greek Kefanion, with its picturesque setting and intimate atmosphere, is a must-visit; in fact, its super-fresh seafood, straight from Mirabello Bay, is so popular you definitely need to book ahead.

    Beyond the Hotel

Seeking to explore more of the local cuisine? Head to Maistrali, located in Agios Nikolaos, for a highly recommended, truly authentic Greek dining experience. A leisurely 30-minute stroll or a five-minute taxi ride from the resort (the latter being the better option as some stretches of road don’t have pavements), the town itself is a cosmopolitan seaside resort, brimming with shops, bars and other eateries as well as museums, archaeolgical wonders, and surrounded by stunning beaches.

    Personal Experience

During my solo stay, I felt safe, relaxed and truly immersed in the hotel’s retreat-like atmosphere, though it’s important to consider that the ambiance may differ during the busier summer months. And the array of activities, including island excursions, watersports, jogging trails, an art gallery, mini club, games room and the wonderful Poseidon Spa meant that the resort works equally well for adventure seekers, lounge lizards and lone travellers.

One of the other standout features here is the approachable and welcoming hotel manager, Alex, who goes above and beyond to make guests feel like family. So, whether you’re seeking a peaceful retreat or a base to explore the vibrant town of Agios Nikolaos and beyond, this resort is more than just a place to stay; it’s an experience that blends elegance with comfort, ensuring each guest leaves with memories of a truly special retreat.
