    HOTEL REVIEW

At Annabelle, old school surprises meet genuine Mediterranean charm.

“The last time I visited Paphos was over 10 years ago and, having had a quick tour of The Annabelle – the grande dame of UNESCO-listed Paphos – I felt at the time that, although it’s always had a fiercely loyal following, it was well overdue a refurbishment.

Fast forward to 2021 and, after a recent 10-millionEuro renovation, the results are fantastic! Fresh-faced and super-smart, The Annabelle has retained its soulful charm and timeless vibe (so repeat guests will still love it), but all sorts of modern touches, clean lines and a more comfortable colour palette have been added throughout.

The highlight is undoubtedly the addition of the year-round, sun- drenched rooftop sanctuary, home to 26 new rooms and suites (taking the total to 244); a bay-view indoor pool; a bar, restaurant and lounge with wrap-around windows and seating inside and out; and, for the first time in the hotel’s history, a state-of-the-art wellness centre with a sauna, gym and four lovely treatment rooms.

Our first stop on arrival was the Ouranos rooftop restaurant. The tapas-style menu was perfect for us at that time (washed down with a few local beers of course!). It’s a great spot for a cheeky sundowner too, with panoramic views over the Mediterranean, the port and the medieval castle.

We stayed in a Sea View Room, located on the first floor – very fresh and super-comfy. We love people-watching too and, with the views out over the big blue expanse of the Med, the sublime sunsets and the large pool below, our step-out balcony was a great spot for us to spend some downtime.

Our days began with breakfast on the terrace at Fontana, after which we spent most of our time at the hotel’s main, multi-level outdoor pool area, which also benefitted from the renovation; its layout changed slightly to improve the flow. Also added were a Jacuzzi and a pool, set inside a make-believe grotto, which is entered through a waterfall.

We found our perfect place on one of the lower tiers, just steps away from the pool, with plenty of shade for my partner and enough space for me to follow the sun around all day. It was also close to the swim- up grotto bar, which we took full advantage of during our stay! As always, all the pool areas are kept immaculate, and there are plenty of places to relax under the sun or in the shade.

The hotel’s location will always be a winner; it is so central – just minutes from Paphos Harbour and steps from the local bars and restaurants, so it was a great launchpad for us to get out and explore the local attractions and nightlife too. Guests can also still enjoy signing privileges, use of the multi-award-winning Explorers Children’s Club and the Almyraspa next door at sister property, Alymra.

As always, the hotel was full of life, with a nice mix of clientele. Most were couples from the UK and a few families with small children, plus a trendy 20-something bride and her wedding party, so there was a real assortment of age groups and a more vibrant atmosphere – definitely a significant shift from my previous visit.

Overall, we couldn’t fault our stay. Laid-back luxury, excellent service, lovely accommodation, great food and a really nice vibe. It will always be my number one recommendation in Paphos. But don’t just take it from me. Go experience it all for yourself!”
