    FRANSCHHOEK

Tucked away in the Groot Drakenstein Mountains, the Franschhoek Wine Route is celebrated as South Africa's "gourmet capital." Franschhoek, meaning "French corner," reflects a strong French heritage in its wine-making, cuisine, art and architecture. Founded by French Huguenot settlers over three centuries ago, the vineyards have integrated wine culture and heritage into the essence of Franschhoek. Local estates offer an intimate experience, inviting visitors to taste exceptional boutique wines and established brands. Notable wine farms include Boschendal, Rickety Bridge, Haute Cabrière and La Motte. These estates often feature shops with farm produce and regional delicacies like cheeses, biltong, jams and oven-fresh bread. The valley also boasts fruit farms which produce high-quality fruits, predominantly for export and artisanal products like organic creams and hand-crafted straw hats.

    MADIKWE GAME RESERVE

Madikwe, reachable by a 4.5-hour drive or a short charter flight from Johannesburg, is one of South Africa's premier Big Five reserves with a policy against day visitors that ensures an exclusive wildlife experience. Famed for sightings of the African wild dog, the reserve plays host to around 66 large mammal species and approximately 300 bird species, thriving in diverse ecosystems from grasslands to mountains. The Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo – are present, along with the critically endangered African wild dog, thanks to Madikwe's conservation efforts having a strong focus on protecting the 'painted dog' to ensure its survival. Introduced in 1994, the wild dog population has since grown to three packs, who are now accustomed to safari vehicles meaning you'll enjoy some excellent photographic opportunities.
