Why Stay?

Kateka does something most safari lodges don't: it treats the hours off the game vehicle as seriously as the ones on it.

The name means "be blessed" in Tsonga, and the wellness runs deep – an F45 gym, an infrared sauna, an indoor ice bath, a rooftop yoga deck above the savanna, art therapy and Mandla beading for the slow afternoons. Then there's the reason you came this far.

Set on the 148,000-acre Klaserie reserve within Greater Kruger, with low vehicle numbers and 39,500 acres to range across, drives turn up the Big Five and the birding the Klaserie River is known for; bush walks bring it down to the scale of a leopard's track or a spider's web. Three suites and a six-sleeper villa each look onto the waterhole. Most telling, though, is the K9 experience – watching the reserve's own dog teams demonstrate the tracking and detection work that keeps everything else here.
