L'APOGÉE COURCHEVEL

COURCHEVEL 1850, FRANCE

The Oetker Collection’s Courchevel address opened in 2025 with a location that makes the most of 1850’s ski-in, ski-out access. Rooms and suites enjoy warm alpine interiors – sumptuous fabrics, bespoke furnishings, nothing jarring – with five-bedroom chalets and four-bedroom penthouses giving larger family groups a more private configuration. Younger children are well catered for through the Mini VIP 1850 and Freestyle 1850 clubs, leaving parents to make full use of the spa and sophisticated dining options. Courchevel does ease of access better than almost anywhere in the Alps; L’Apogée is a fabulous way to be right in the middle of it.

LES BARMES DE L'OURS

VAL D'ISÈRE, FRANCE

Positioned directly beside the Bellevarde slope, Les Barmes de L’Ours keeps skiing at the centre of the stay. People drift in and out through the day – quick returns for lunch, children warming up between lessons or disappearing off to their dedicated play zones, skiers peeling layers off beside the entrance before heading down to the spa. The interiors lean heavily Alpine without becoming cliché: timber beams, thick fabrics, lower lighting and public spaces that come into their own once the weather closes in. Evenings are a little different here too, thanks largely to the Michelin-starred restaurant, which gives dining more focus than at some of Val d’Isère’s more après-focused addresses.

FOUR SEASONS HOTEL MEGÈVE

MEGÈVE, FRANCE

Megève has always done skiing differently from the higher-altitude French resorts – less hard-charging ski station, more mountain town where lunch surreptitiously takes over the afternoon if no-one checks the time. Four Seasons fits comfortably into that atmosphere. Families split naturally between the slopes, the age-specific children’s clubs and the spa, and the village centre is close enough for aimless evening wandering. Interiors balance Savoyard references with lighter contemporary touches, and the Rothschild connection appears through craftsmanship and art. The pistes lie moments away when the mountain takes priority again, but the hotel understands that in Megève the skiing is only part of the attraction.

THE CHEDI ANDERMATT

ANDERMATT, SWITZERLAND

The Chedi still feels unlike anywhere else in the Alps, which is largely why it has held people’s attention for so long. Dark timber, enormous fireplaces and low-lit spaces borrow heavily from Asian design, but the scale and materials rest comfortably against the mountains outside. The 35-metre pool beneath its timber lattice ceiling is arguably the hotel’s defining space, particularly during snowfall, when the whole room takes on a quieter tone. Dining matters here too, from Japanese and Swiss restaurants to a wine and cheese cellar where evenings often continue well after dinner finishes. Andermatt itself has expanded significantly over the last decade, with enough challenging terrain now to keep experienced skiers occupied for far longer than a short weekend.

GRAND HOTEL ZERMATTERHOF

ZERMATT, SWITZERLAND

The Zermatterhof has occupied the same position in the centre of Zermatt since 1852, long enough that the hotel is a big part of village life. Outside, electric taxis move slowly through the snow beneath the Matterhorn while skiers cross the square in boots on their way back from the lifts. Inside, the scale is grand without becoming stiff. Afternoons tend to settle around the spa, pool and regionally focused wine cellar once people return from the mountain, and staff continuity here is the real deal: some families have worked at the hotel across generations, and many guests return often enough to recognise familiar faces each winter.

W VERBIER

VERBIER, SWITZERLAND

Verbier has never been lacking in confidence and nightlife, so the W never attempts to soften the resort into something subdued or more conventional. By late afternoon, the bar begins pulling people back in from across the resort – inventive cocktails prepared to perfection, DJs setting up for the evening, groups regrouping before heading back out into town later on. Interiors are modern throughout, with strong colour, large social spaces and art that avoids the usual Alpine clichés entirely. The spa earns its keep the following morning, and mountain access is among the best in the resort. Not the quietest address in Verbier, nor does it pretend to be.

BADRUTT'S PALACE HOTEL

ST MORITZ, SWITZERLAND

Badrutt’s has sat at the centre of St Moritz since the late 19th century, and over time the hotel has become part of the resort’s identity rather than simply one of its grand addresses. Mornings begin gently beneath the lake views before skiers head up the mountain. By evening, the bars and corridors gradually fill with the familiar winter migration between drinks, dinner and one last stop before bed. The indoor-outdoor pool is at its best once steam starts rising into the evening air – one of the great cold-weather pleasures of the Alps – and service leans old-school in the best sense: discreet, attentive and sincerely familiar with returning guests. Hotels at this level can sometimes feel slightly performative; Badrutt’s is far more comfortable than that.

THURNHER'S ALPENHOF

ZÜRS, AUSTRIA

Family-owned for generations, Thurnher’s Alpenhof has the ambience of a hotel that has evolved gradually over time instead of being assembled around a luxury formula. Painted furniture, collected antiques and low-lit sitting rooms give the interiors real warmth once snowfall starts building outside. The restaurant focuses closely on Austrian mountain cooking and seasonal local ingredients without trying to overcomplicate them. The spa draws on alpine herbs and restorative treatments that suit the setting naturally, and the staff remember you, which at a hotel of this quality is rarer than it should be. Zürs itself is quieter and less showy than many major Alpine resorts, which suits the hotel down to the ground.

SEVERIN'S – THE ALPINE RETREAT

With only nine suites, Severin’s operates at the kind of scale where privacy becomes entirely believable rather than simply advertised. Hallways stay quiet, pools of low light soften the interiors and staff seem to appear exactly when needed before fading discreetly back into the background again. The wine cellar runs deep enough for serious tastings, dinners are carefully crafted around seasonal produce, and spa appointments are arranged privately instead of through the usual hotel routine. Lech has long attracted guests who prefer understatement to spectacle, and Severin’s fits comfortably into that side of the resort. One of those hotels where conversations seem to soften without anyone meaning them to.

Rosa Alpina has been part of San Cassiano for generations, and the hotel is intensely tied to the Dolomites around it – the Ladin culture, the pale rock faces and the calmer pace compared with some of the larger Franco-Swiss resorts. By late afternoon, skiers return to wood-panelled rooms, open fires and views towards the peaks that define this part of northern Italy. St Hubertus, the three-Michelin-starred restaurant, may be the culinary centrepiece, but the hotel itself feels notably relaxed despite its reputation. Local craftsmanship appears throughout the interiors, and the service carries the confidence of a property that understood its identity long before Aman arrived.

The Biohotel Hermitage embraces wellness without theatrics. Its commitment to sustainability is real but worn lightly, and the atmosphere stays warm and comfortable rather than overtly worthy. On the Italian side of the Matterhorn, Cervinia climbs to almost 4000 metres, making it one of Europe's highest ski resorts, and just 300 metres from its slopes is the Hotel Hermitage. Its grand chalet-style interiors and deeply atmospheric spa – not to mention Aosta Valley-focused cooking, regional wines and extensive grappa selection – are a delight to return to after long days on the slopes. Heliskiing and glacier excursions leave directly from the private helipad; quieter evenings usually finish in the cinema with old Italian films and something strong brought over from the bar halfway through.
