Huka Lodge, Taupo, North Island, New Zealand
An enchanting landscape of lakes, mountains and waterfalls forms a vast backdrop to this iconic property that’s welcomed everyone from Billy Connolly to Bill Gates and, on her last visit to NZ, the Queen.
Huka has quite a reputation. If you're expecting high standards, you won't be disappointed. You will be surprised though. In spite of its celebrity status, there's no snobbiness; just pure relaxation: a secluded lodge in an idyllic spot with unspoilt scenery and river views as beautiful as you could imagine.
The suites are almost as gorgeous: expansive, light, airy and bringing the outdoors in, with the fabulous Owner's Cottage (and recently-built Alan Pye Cottage) offering extra privacy. Just the thing for the weary celeb.
For activities (and especially if you like your fish) you'll find the Waikato and some 40 other nearby rivers which attract anglers from all over the globe.
Fishing is not the only attraction though: gourmet cuisine, swimming, spa pools, rafting, bungee jumping and limousine rides to view geysers, boiling mud pools and volcanoes at Rotorua town, are also great alternatives.
