THE TREEHOUSES

Unlike anywhere else in the Maldives, Amilla has a great choice of two or more-bedroom homes, so it's just as idyllic for families and groups of friends as it is couples. And as well as hovering over water, or hugging the sand, there are show-stopping Two Bedroom Tree Houses too – a first in the Maldives and unique in every way. Set 12 metres above ground, hidden away in the lush jungle foliage, they may have a rustic exterior, but inside they're sleek and contemporary, with thoroughly-modern amenities; bunk beds for the little ones; bathrooms inside and out; BBQs, and canopy-level freshwater pools (another world first). See how many species of fish you can spot, all just steps from your overwater haven, complete – like all Amilla's island homes – with free daily 50-minute massages and butler service too, so if you over-exert yourself by day, a visit to the the spa – or delicious seafood BBQ served by your butler – can ease away the strain.​

Continuing Amilla's incredibly-luxurious yet super-relaxed feel are the dining options. 

Definitely worth a mention is Baazaar, an ingenious food 'bazaar' where you can satisfy all your cravings, from pizza, fish and chips or tapas to the freshest line-caught local fish – each with a 'home' delivery service if you're feeling lazy. 

But the pièce de résistance is the overwater Lonu and its stunning rooftop sunset bar, headed up by acclaimed Aussie Chef Luke Mangan (described by Anthony Bourdain as 'the Michael Corleone of Sydney's restaurant scene'). 

Bringing the kind of food people really want to eat on holiday, out goes starched-shirt service, lobster and linen, and in come barefoot cocktails, barbecue flavours, zingy ceviches and tropical ingredients – all realised to absolute perfection. ​

If you're a bit of a foodie and enjoy good old-fashioned artisanal treats, then Amilla Fushi has something for you too! Head to the island's Emperor General Store and you'll find a superb choice of deli-style snacks, charcuterie, cheeses and freshly-baked breads. 

Order café-style gourmet sandwiches from the deli, grab a coffee to go and enjoy while relaxing at the Maldives' largest swimming pool; or take your pick from fresh fruits, vegetables, bakery items, meats and gourmet preserves and have your butler create a selection of nibbles for you and your family to feast on over a long, leisurely in-villa lunch. 

And don't forget to stop by the Wine Shop and Cellar Door to pick up some wine from the 8000-bottle collection to sip on whilst watching the sun sink below the horizon.​
