Picture yourself in paradise, surrounded by pearlescent beaches, aquamarine waters and emerald palms. Lazily napping on your hammock; taking a refreshing dip in your private pool, or tucking into take-out fish and chips quirkily wrapped in newspaper, accompanied by a bottle of New Zealand’s finest and the glow from your own personal fire pit. That’s what you’ll get when you head out to Amilla Fushi, one of the Maldives' most hotly-anticipated resorts.

Close enough to Malé to not have to think about long transfers; far enough away for pristine marine experiences, this intimate island home has an unpretentious approach that gives you more of what you want: more space and privacy when it comes to accommodation; more freedom when it comes to dining; and more adventures whatever your mood.

THE TREEHOUSES

Unlike anywhere else in the Maldives, Amilla has a great choice of two or more-bedroom homes, so it's just as idyllic for families and groups of friends as it is couples. And as well as hovering over water, or hugging the sand, there are show-stopping Two Bedroom Tree Houses too – a first in the Maldives and unique in every way. Set 12 metres above ground, hidden away in the lush jungle foliage, they may have a rustic exterior, but inside they're sleek and contemporary, with thoroughly-modern amenities; bunk beds for the little ones; bathrooms inside and out; BBQs, and canopy-level freshwater pools (another world first). Kids will adore their tree-top adventure, while grown-ups will love popping to the store, grabbing some nibbles and whipping up a few sundowners from their in-room cocktail kit.

THE OCEAN REEF HOUSES

For those that can't get enough of the marine life, the beautiful Ocean Reef Houses are a match made in heaven. Perfectly positioned right on the edge of the reef,  you've got the ocean, one of the healthiest coral reefs in the Indian Ocean, and a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve quite literally at your feet. Relax on your spacious outdoor terrace or in your freshwater pool; or better still, go snorkeling from your own private deck which drops directly onto the reef edge. See how many species of fish you can spot, all just steps from your overwater haven, complete – like all Amilla's island homes – with free daily 50-minute massages and butler service too, so if you over-exert yourself by day, a visit to the the spa – or delicious seafood BBQ served by your butler – can ease away the strain.

LONU BY LUKE MANGAN

Continuing Amilla's incredibly-luxurious yet super-relaxed feel are the dining options.

Definitely worth a mention is Baazaar, an ingenious food 'bazaar' where you can satisfy all your cravings, from pizza, fish and chips or tapas to the freshest line-caught local fish – each with a 'home' delivery service if you're feeling lazy.

But the pièce de résistance is the overwater Lonu and its stunning rooftop sunset bar, headed up by acclaimed Aussie Chef Luke Mangan (described by Anthony Bourdain as 'the Michael Corleone of Sydney's restaurant scene').

Bringing the kind of food people really want to eat on holiday, out goes starched-shirt service, lobster and linen, and in come barefoot cocktails, barbecue flavours, zingy ceviches and tropical ingredients – all realised to absolute perfection.

EMPEROR GENERAL STORE

If you're a bit of a foodie and enjoy good old-fashioned artisanal treats, then Amilla Fushi has something for you too! Head to the island's Emperor General Store and you'll find a superb choice of deli-style snacks, charcuterie, cheeses and freshly-baked breads.

Order café-style gourmet sandwiches from the deli, grab a coffee to go and enjoy while relaxing at the Maldives' largest swimming pool; or take your pick from fresh fruits, vegetables, bakery items, meats and gourmet preserves and have your butler create a selection of nibbles for you and your family to feast on over a long, leisurely in-villa lunch.

And don't forget to stop by the Wine Shop and Cellar Door to pick up some wine from the 8000-bottle collection to sip on whilst watching the sun sink below the horizon.

THE JAVVU SPA

Body Treatments by ila. Massages by Pure Massage. Hair by Louise Galvin. A Gentlemen's Tonic barber's. Mani/pedi's by Margaret Dabb. Facials by QMS. And a varied and vibrant spa calendar where the best in fitness, yoga, beauty and meditation will be gracing the island with their company throughout the year. But that's not all you'll find in store at Amilla's Javvu Spa. After strolling barefoot through the lush, secret garden of the Wild Grove, a silent, cool space set in the natural forest, you can choose either to retreat to your spa pod set in protective canopy of the trees for your treatment, or chill out in the communal social lounge where you can sit back, relax, sip on Champagne or herbal teas and soak up the views, whether you're booked in for a treatment or not.
