FROM ITS PEOPLE TO THE SPECTACULAR WILDLIFE; THE SUPERB FOOD OR THE WONDERFUL WINES IT'S NO WONDER SOUTH AFRICA IS KNOWN AS 'THE RAINBOW NATION'!

This is a big country – twice the size of France, in fact – and its diversity is just as staggering. There's a little bit of everything here: arid deserts, lush forests, manicured vineyards, dramatic mountains... not to mention rich game viewing, from charging elephants to wadding penguins.

It's as visually breathtaking as its cities are varied too: the hustle and bustle of Johannesburg contrasts sharply with the fun-loving seaside ambience of Durban and the European-style chic of Cape Town. In between are game reserves and wilderness, quaint towns and costal resorts, all easily explored by the excellent road network, or by the legendary luxury of Rovos Rail.

Two favourite areas though are the fertile valleys that are home to not only some of the world's best wines but also some of its best restaurants. Both have their own distinctive beauty and unique landscapes coupled with luxurious places to stay.

South Africa is full of great contrasts and vibrant colour, unrivalled natural beauty and never-ending vistas, And although its people and culture are equally wide-ranging – for example, there are no fewer than eleven official languages (although English is the main one) – they unify this country wherever you travel. South Africans are among the most upbeat, welcoming and humorous people you'll find anywhere, and they bring a new vitality to this fascinating destination.

HIGHLIGHTS

Meet the Meerkats: These cuddly little critters are more popular than ever, thanks to the TV ads and 'Meerkat Manor' – and as South Africa's Kalahari is their natural habitat, is there anywhere better to get up close and personal?

Visit the Boer battlefields: The bloody conflicts of the Boer War more than a century ago are commemorated in the Battlefields region of KwaZulu-Natal. We can arrange specialist guides to bring each and every fascinating tale and poignant memory to life.

GAME RESERVES

FLORA, FAUNA AND FANTASTIC SCENERY... AND WITH THE KRUGER, BLYDE RIVER CANYON AND MORE, MPUMALANGA IS SIMPLY UNFORGETTABLE. THE AMAZING GUIDES WILL SHOW YOU THE VERY BEST OF IT, TOO.

'Safari' literally means 'journey'. And a journey here takes you to some of the world's premier game viewing. Best-known is the Kruger National Park, so big that even with 1.5 million visitors a year, only five percent of it is ever affected. Its wildlife is easily accessible too, especially in private reserves such as Sabi Sand in the west, and Timbavati.

Prefer scenery to safari? Head for the Mpumalanga and the Panorama Route, with astonishing landscapes and the magnificent Blyde River Canyon – the third largest in the world; an ideal base is White River, perfectly placed for the Panorama Route – and a journey you'll always remember.

TOP TIP

An unforgettable elephant experience: On the banks of the Sabie River in Hazyview is Elephant Whispers: a project aimed at helping people understand the African elephants – and giving visitors the chance to interact with, touch, feed and even ride these magnificent creatures in a close encounter of the most extraordinary kind!
