"There is a peacefulness, a serenity, to Danai Beach Resort & Villas, which is apparent as soon as your car glides through the electric gates towards a warm welcome at the chic, marbled reception.

​This is a resort which, somehow, cleverly manages to retain a sense of real tranquillity even when nearing full occupancy.

Birds can be heard flocking to their evening perch; while other guests are rarely seen away from the beach and its adjacent restaurants.

There are 60 suites and villas in all, but it's difficult to believe there could be as many as 130 guests and 160 staff on property at any one time; the sense is of a classy, established Mediterranean village, with manicured lawns and a gentle slope to the sea, past a chic boutique (selling mainly beachwear, sun-dresses and good jewellery), and an atmospheric wine cellar carved out of the rock with bragging rights to the largest variety of labels in all of Greece. 

The pool is hidden away in the centre of it all, next to the excellent, compact gym and impressive spa with its dizzying array of steam, sauna and treatment rooms, all of which use natural products.

​Nights are silent and a good sleep is all but guaranteed in exceptionally comfortable beds; breakfast is a generous, varied and thoughtful spread, with delicious egg dishes made to order. Taken on a terrace, shaded by trees and looking down over the expansive south-facing beach and azure water, it's the perfect start to another lazy day. For, in truth, there is very little reason or motivation to venture off-property.

​There are three restaurants, one specialising in Greek food, one Mediterranean, and a third, set higher in the trees, offering award-winning gourmet tasting menus.

The beach offers cabanas, if you need to escape into your own private cocoon, and plenty of staff are on-hand to bring snacks and clean your sunglasses. The bar is the perfect place to watch the spectacular sunset, and has a more contemporary, Ibiza-style vibe than the rest of the resort, which is traditional in design; it also has wonderful, friendly service, characteristic of Danai as a whole. 

​It was no surprise to learn that around 50% of guests here are repeat visitors.

Early and late in the season, Danai likes to upgrade these loyal guests, space permitting – so next time, we're hoping for one of the two stunning Mediterranean Suites, when, if we're lucky enough, you'll find us on the vast terrace, gazing at the glorious Aegean and wondering, in the silence, if we're the only ones there.
