From the arid Atacama Desert to the icy glaciers of Patagonia, linked by an evolving topography of undulating volcanoes, lush rainforest, snow-capped peaks and flowing fjords, no place on Earth offers a man versus nature moment like Chile.

A staggering slice of land sandwiched between the Andes and Pacific Ocean – bordering Peru, Bolivia and Argentina – the rich eco-systems and unrivalled vistas of Chile beckon travellers and their backpacks like a siren call. For those with the luxury of time and a deep-rooted desire to leap off the well-trodden track (where all the best kind of exploits lie), Chile offers rugged adventure in abundance. Additionally, with the recent opening of the Route of Parks – 17 national parks creating a chain of 1700 miles of previously untarnished land – there has never been a better time for unbridled exploration. Embracing the road less travelled, here EDEN unravels a series of unique ways to bask in Chile's breathtaking landscapes.

HIKE THROUGH LESSER-KNOWN LOCATIONS

sWhilst well-versed travellers are familiar with heralded treks through San Pedro de Atacama or the Torres del Paine National Park, head to Conguillio National Park for something a little different.

A lesser-known area of exceptional natural beauty, hidden within this volcanic region are ancient forests, lakes, lagoons and unprecedented lava fields. Offering a window into a prehistoric yesteryear – it was the filming location for Walking with Dinosaurs – a charred stretch of land blends seamlessly with a canopy of leafy foliage and araucaria trees (known locally as Monkey Puzzle trees due to their curious shape).

Framed by the dramatic silhouette of the looming Llaima Volcano and Sierra Nevada Mountains, saunter along the Sierra Nevada Trail for picturesque trekking highlights including Conguillio Lake. An abundantly rich area for flora and fauna, look out for native species such as Pudu (South American deer), wild cats and the Chilla Fox.

Alternatively, if hiking Atacama and conquering a volcano feature high up on your bucket-list, the Licancabur Volcano awaits. Held in high esteem locally for good reason, this soaring peak sits 5900 metres above the Bolivian/ Chile border. Whilst not for the faint-hearted (or altitude-affected!), the two-day climb to summit here makes for an unforgettable experience beyond the norm. Expect unspoilt views of ancient Inca ruins as well as one of the world's highest crater lakes.

BASK IN GEOTHERMAL HOT SPRINGS

As a volcanic country nestled in the Pacific Rim of Fire, Chile has geothermal activity by the geyser-load. Home to an excess of 270 thermal pools – with everything from high-altitude hot springs to lush Lake District oases – there's no better place to dip your toe (quite literally) in post-trekking relaxation.

For natural bathing in the Andean Highlands, venture to Termas de Puritama, tucked away in the chilly foothills of San Pedro de Atacama. A desert sanctuary carved through the heart of a canyon, here you can plunge into bubbling geothermal pools with natural minerals aplenty. Head out with renewed vigour (and magnesium-soaked muscles) to explore nearby iconic sights such as the Atacama Salt Flat, Los Flamencos Reserve and the Tatio Geysers.

Nestled in the Patagonian wilderness and perched along the shores of a fjord, however, Puyuhupi Hot Springs offers wild bathing at its very best. Sympathetic to the lush, mountainous landscape of the unique Carretera Austral region, three outdoor hot spring pools offer timeless soaking amidst spectacular scenery and wildlife. Home to a wellness centre that boasts thalassotherapy using marine muds, algae and salt water, wellbeing takes on a whole new meaning here.

SKI OR SNOWBOARD BACK-COUNTRY TERRAIN

One of the very few places you can ski and snowboard from July to September, alpine sports are another huge draw for Chile. With incredible slopes etched through the Andes mountain range, seasoned skiers flock to the surrounds of Santiago, including the buzzy Valparaiso area or Valle Nevado for virgin snow. However Southern Chile, namely the Lake and Volcano District and Patagonia, are fast becoming a haven for skiers of all abilities.

Home to snow-capped peaks and unchartered back-country routes – as well as offering reliable snowfall and astounding volcanic views – Chile's Corralco Ski Resort remains a hidden gem. Perched atop of the spectacular Lonquimay Volcano and Malalcahuello back-country, off-piste skiing, trekking and boarding tours tread through Monkey Puzzle trees and crater rims of the volcano's southern edge. Dotted around the mountain range are surrounding villages, secluded alpine huts and thermal hot springs for the ultimate mountainous escape. Pack your GoPro to document all the unmissable high-altitude highlights.

ENJOY A CELESTIAL EXPERIENCE IN THE ATACAMA DESERT

Home to the iconic red rock formations of Valle de la Luna – perhaps the single most documented view in the country – it is hardly surprising that Chile has become famed for its lunar landscapes. Less known, however, is that the Atacama Desert has also become an extraordinary location for stargazing. Offering unmatched astrological conditions (dry climate, clear skies, light and pollution free), over 40 observatories built for celestial viewing have been documented here. Travellers interested in marvelling at Chile's unique lunar landscape, though, should head to San Pedro de Atacama Celestial Explorations. Founded by French astronomer Alain Maury, visitors are ferried into the desert each night to admire the desert's unique cosmological landscape. Gawp at surrounding galaxies, nebulae, planets and shooting stars; whatever telescopic discoveries you make, you won't be disappointed. If ever there was a place to leap off the beaten path and marvel at otherworldly landscapes, it's here.

SAMPLE WINE CHILLED BY A SUBTERRANEAN LAKE

Slowly but surely, Chile has been drawing in crowds of connoisseurs looking to indulge in fine vintage wines. One such iconic place is Vik Chile. Nestled in the rolling Milahue Valley, acclaimed for its optimal grape-growing conditions, this all-suite art hotel boasts an extensive private vineyard producing award-winning wines.

Stored within subterranean casks beneath a series of shallow architectural lakes – all designed to cool the wine vaults to the ultimate temperature – fine bottles of Carmenere, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlots are masterfully produced here.

Offering private wine-tastings, tours to the equally abundant Colchagua and Cachapoal Wine Valleys and its very own 'Wine Spa' with grape-inspired treatments, embrace a James Bond-style retreat in an exclusive Andes setting.

HORSEBACK RIDE THROUGH RAPA NUI

One of the most remote places on Earth, Easter Island (known locally as Rapa Nui) has undoubtedly become one of the hottest tourist trails for those travelling to Chile. This enigmatic volcanic island has pulled in the crowds for years, leaving visitors mystified by its famed archaeological site of towering Moai sculptures.

Whilst no visit to Chile would be complete without a trip to Easter Island, rather than walk the well-trodden path, unique horse-riding tours offer a different vantage point of the island. Trek to astounding spots on the north coast (some only accessible by horse) including the Orongo stone village, Anakena Beach and Rano Raraku Volcano crater, to explore the island's unique landscape. Head to the top of Mount Terevaka – the highest point on Easter Island – to soak up uninterrupted archaeological views.

TREK THE SOUTHERN PATAGONIAN ICE FIELD

Home to a shimmering expanse of polar activity (the world's second largest), you couldn't be further from terra firma on the Southern Patagonian Ice Field.

Encompassing mesmerising views of ice, rocks, glaciers and fjords, guided treks through this region will lead you to the ancient formations of Torres del Paine and San Rafael Lagoon National Parks or through the glacial crevasses of picturesque Carretera Austral.

After experiencing the arid Atacama Dunes and lush mountainous Lake District, scaling this icy terrain – armed with only your wits (and axes) – will leave you with a lasting impression of Chile's otherworldly landscape.
