DAY 1 Outbound international flight to Atlanta.

Stay: Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta (2 nights)
DAY 2 Atlanta

The so called capital of the South is bursting with life and things to do, including the High Museum of Art, the Georgia Aquarium (the largest in the Western Hemisphere), Piedmont Park, and the College Football Hall of Fame. It’s also long been an important centre of African-American culture and politics, so a visit to The Martin Luther King, Jr., National Historic Site, showcasing his childhood home and displaying a number of moving civil rights exhibits, is most-certainly a must.
DAY 3 Atlanta to Savannah
Drive Time: 3 hours, 30 minutes | Distance: 251 miles

Leaving Atlanta mid-morning will allow you to stop at Macon – a small but beautiful town where you can visit the Ocmulgee National Monument and see the Great Temple Mound, or visit the Civil War battlefields.

Stay: The Mansion on Forsyth Park (2 nights)
DAY 4 Savannah

Savannah is one of the oldest cities in the state of Georgia, its southern charms starting, of course, with the dramatic antebellum homes. The 30-acre, historic Forsyth Park is perfect for a picnic; take a drive out to Tybee Island, just 18 miles from Savannah, to soak up the sum on the gorgeous five miles of white sandy beaches; or if you just can't resist a spot of shopping, head to historic River Street's quaint specialty shops.
DAY 5 Savannah to Charleston
Drive Time: 1 hour, 55 minutes | Distance: 110 miles

Make a short stop en-route to Charleston at Drayston Hall – a 1738 Palladian brick mansion and the only plantation house on the Ashley River to survive the Revolutionary and Civil Wars and the great earthquake of 1886.

Stay: Belmond Charleston Place (3 nights)
DAYS 6-7 Charleston

Cobbled streets, clopping horse carriages, and classic architecture are what Charleston is best known for. Yet over the past decade this port city has made a constant reinvention with its cultural and culinary scene exploding citywide, giving way to cutting-edge new galleries, boutiques, bakeries, breweries and coffee shops. It’s also known as the ‘Holy City’ with its abundance of houses of worship. The kids will undoubtedly enjoy a visit to the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon, and for that perfect ‘Kodak moment’, head to Rainbow Row with its candy-coloured houses.
DAY 8 Charleston to Charlotte
Drive Time: 3 hours, 5 minutes | Distance: 208 miles

Break up your journey with a stop in Columbia, South Carolina's capital city which dates back more than 250 years. Particularly rich in civil rights and military history, there's much for the history buff to immerse themselves in. Delve into national and state history at the museums, explore historic homes and sites like the South Carolina State House, take a walking tour and step back in time as you stroll streets marked with history on almost every corner.

Stay: The Ritz-Carlton, Charlotte (2 nights)
DAY 9 Charlotte

Charlotte has endured war, poverty, racial strife and financial crisis on its way to becoming a global banking powerhouse. In the last decade, it's seen revitalisation in nearby enclaves like Dilworth, NoDa and Plaza Midwood, leaving galleries, breweries and farm-to-table enterprises in their wake. The "Queen City" is smaller and easier to navigate than, say, Atlanta, and is an excellent place to soak up the new Old South.
DAYS 10-12 Charlotte to Asheville
Drive Time: 2 hours, 10 minutes | Distance: 133 miles

Completed in 1895, George Vanderbilt's 250-room chateau is as impressive today as it was more than a century ago. Biltmore House is truly a wonder of architecture and hospitality. As a guest, you're invited to enjoy a self-guided tour of the house, as well as the beautiful gardens and grounds surrounding it, designed by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted.

Stay: The Inn on Biltmore Estate (3 nights)
DAY 13 Depart Charlotte on your international flight back to London Heathrow.
PRICES 12 nights from £2,830 per person, including flights & car hire
