DAY 1 International outbound flight to Boston
DAYS 2-3 Boston

America's most intimate metropolis, or its biggest small town… either way, Boston is a classic, charming New England destination. Its narrow streets and brick buildings give it a distinctive European air - way more so than most other American cities but it also offers its own fair share of thoroughly-modern touches.

Stay: Four Seasons Hotel Boston (3 nights)
DAY 4 Boston to Kennebunkport, Maine
Drive Time: 1 hour, 30 minutes | Distance: 86 miles

A relatively short journey, but one that could take an entire day if you decide to stop off in Salem (which we highly recommend). Famous for the 1692 Witch Trials, it's also rich in maritime history and home to an unrivalled collection of art and culture at the Peabody Essex Museum. You may also like to stop for lunch or afternoon tea in Portsmouth, one of New Hampshire's most elegant towns, with for its tax-free shopping, waterfront views, tree-lined streets and 18th-century colonial buildings.

Stay: White Barn Grace (3 nights)
DAYS 5-6 Kennebunkport

An all-American hideaway and quintessential New England seaside town, this idyllic beach hamlet may be a favourite summer retreat of the Bush family, but it’s also a great year-rounder. Its historic streets are steeped in local lore, and you can explore the town on foot, bike, car or trolley tour. Take a drive along Ocean Avenue for grand ocean views, natural blowholes and a peek at the Bush Compound, Walker’s Point.
DAY 7 Kennebunkport to West Townshend, Vermont
Drive Time: 3 hours, 5 minutes | Distance: 172 miles

Driving throughout New England allows you to see a wealth of interesting sights, and this journey is no different. Stop in Peterborough and visit either the Macdowell Colony - a century-old art colony which draws over 250 poets, writers, composers every year, or Miller State Park, the oldest state park in New Hampshire.

Stay: Windham Hill Inn (3 nights)
DAYS 8-9 West Townshend

Discover the magic of southern Vermont's Green Mountains. Explore the 160 acres of unspoiled nature right at Windham Hill Inn, or venture out into the Green Mountain National Forest or one of the nearby gardens. Just 45 minutes' drive away is Hildene, the home of Abraham Lincoln's descendants, or a little further out, the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park.
DAY 10 West Townshend to Newport, Rhode Island
Drive Time: 3 hours, 20 minutes | Distance: 180 miles

Your journey today takes you from the Green Mountains of Vermont, through Massachusetts and on to Rhode Island, where you'll pass through the state's capital, Providence and on to Newport, the birthplace of the traditional American vacation.

Stay: Vanderbilt Grace (3 nights)
DAYS 11-12 Newport

For such a small state, there's actually a lot of cool stuff to see: from the celebrated restaurants in Providence, and the natural beauty of Block Island to Newport's Mansion Tours (do visit our own personal favourite, Kingscote – a wooden Gothic Revival mansion completed in 1841 and probably the least well-known of them all; and The Elms, completed in 1901, worth a visit for its wine cellar, coal tunnel, and servants' quarters).
DAY 13 Depart Boston on your international flight to London Heathrow.
PRICES 12 nights from £2,995 per person, including flights & car hire
