If walls could talk, the Astoria's would probably scream, having borne witness to most of the city's turbulent history. But it's the central St Isaac's Square location (perfect for sightseeing) and little luxuries like the incredible Families R Forte programmes, Russian delicacies, and divine face and body treatments at the Maison de Beauté Carita that make this our first choice in the country's cultural hub.
Accommodation-wise, go for an exterior view as inner-courtyard views are less than inspiring; and don't leave without sampling Beluga caviar and ice-cold vodka in the Lichfield bar – or the Rotonda Lounge's afternoon tea – a St Petersburg institution.
