Still relatively mysterious after years of conflict hid them from foreign eyes, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos are three of the most enriching, enlivening destinations we know.

A cultural journey through Indochina will guide you through some of the Far East's most commercial and least-explored destinations.

Start in an intoxicating city where top-notch hotels and 'bling bling' shops mix with fascinating heritage and sparkling reservoirs; then be transported onto a different world: a world where the colours are more vivid, the culture richer and the history even more compelling.

Welcome to Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, the latest Asian dragons to awake from their slumber.

Enjoy sunrises over ancient temples, with golden Buddhas drawing pilgrims from across the globe, friendly locals who invite you in for tea and sublime beaches, that to this day remain relatively untouched.

MUST-DO'S

1/

The gateway to the mesmerising temples of Angkor is Siem Reap: once a sleepy village but rapidly becoming a tourist mecca. The perfect base for visiting the temples, it’s still charming with its shady tree-lined boulevards and old French shop-houses.

2/

Ho Chi Minh City, or Saigon, presents Vietnam at its liveliest. Its 10 million residents are constantly on the move, and it’s a city of contrasts too, where gleaming skyscrapers rub shoulders with ramshackle wooden shops and old French colonial architecture.

Days 1 to 8

Luang Prabang to Hanoi

Mention South-East Asia and most people tend to think of Thailand or Malaysia – but it would be such a shame to overlook Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

Laos is a glimpse of Old Asia, with a pace of life that goes back 10,000 years and Buddhism everywhere: its mountains, mists and natural beauty, with charming cities like the elegant capital of Vientiane and wonderfully-preserved Luang Prabang: calm and tranquil with saffron-robed monks moving silently between monasteries. Among the oldest is Wat Wisunalat, while most magnificent is Wat Xieng Thong. Here we suggest a stay at the gorgeous Amantaka.

The region's rising star is Cambodia, with beautiful beaches, fascinating Khmer culture and absorbing cities like Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. We love this place (especially the extraordinary Amansara), with its lovely riverside setting and vibrant restaurants and bars.

Most come to see the legendary temples of Angkor; over 11 centuries old, the 100-temple complex is breathtaking, and nothing beats sunrise or sunset there… apart, perhaps, from seeing it from a hot-air balloon.

AMANSARA

 SIEM REAP, CAMBODIA

True 1960s cool brought bang up-to-date, the sleek modernist architecture of Amansara – a former royal guest house – has been exquisitely restored. There's a wonderful informality here – the self-service bar in your room and dinner when and where you choose, for example, all delivered with the usual seamless Aman service. But the real highlights are the definitive guided temple excursions to the nearby Angkor sites, by remork (moped-powered trishaws), balloon, helicopter or even elephant!

AMANTAKA

 LUANG PRABANG, LAOS

Originally a hospital, this French colonial-style haven is still a place of healing, as well as a sumptuous retreat from everyday life. It's a contrast in a town full of gilded temples and intricate carvings too, with simple, unfussy décor combining South-East Asian style with Western mod cons in the vast, light and airy suites. Both spa and service are up to the usual phenomenal Aman standards, and in addition to guided excursions, the hotel has a number of local experts on hand for fascinating insights.

SIX SENSES CON DAO
CON DAO, VIETNAM

Leave it to Six Senses to discover this isolated gem of an island, shielded by arboreal hills, with a tantalising mile of sandy beach to enjoy. A pure retreat from the outside world, the resort’s 50 villas have been fashioned from locally-sourced tropical hardwood, all with a private saltwater pool that seemingly blends into the East Vietnam Sea’s innumerable shades of blue. The heart of Six Senses Con Dao though is its Vietnamese kitchen, where authentic delicacies are cooked to create the best ‘street food’ you’ve ever tasted. Divine.

Days 11 to 19

Hanoi to Con Dao

Most surprising is Vietnam. The former capital of Hanoi is an exotic blend of modern Asia, elegant boulevards and cafés, an atmospheric Old Quarter and sharp-suited designer restaurants – spend three days here at the Sofitel Legend Metropole, and don't miss a trip to dream-like Ha Long Bay, either.

For watersports adventures and beach relaxation, head south to Ninh Van Bay. But if you’re seeking the splendour of royal palaces and historic tombs and temples, Hue is a city packed full of culture.

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) is Vietnam at its liveliest, a mix of modern commerce with teeming markets and ancient pagodas. The sheer energy is brilliant… and so is the wonderful calm of the Park Hyatt Saigon, at the very heart of the city.

From here take a 45-minute flight to the Six Senses Con Dao, on a tiny chain of unspoilt islands noted for idyllic beaches, coral reefs and scenic bays. It's the perfect way to experience the startling natural beauty of Vietnam… and to finish a visit to this most extraordinary region!
