"A 35-minute hop from Malé, then 15 minutes by speedboat, Six Senses Laamu may not be the easiest Maldivian island to get to, but we both instantly fell in love with it on arrival.

Greeted by our own Guest Experience Maker Ravah, we were shown to our beautiful Water Villa with Pool.

At the end of the jetties, they're very private, and parked outside were two bikes with our initials on wooden plaques (nice!).

The wow factor comes from the villa's huge space and quirky features: sinks set into old-fashioned brown leather trunks, a sunken glass bath where you can watch sea-life drift by, and an upper deck with amazing panoramic views – great for quiet afternoon naps or a spot of after dark star-gazing (though the stairs are steep, so do watch your step after a few drinks…)!

Speaking of which, Chill Lounge and Bar's cocktail menu is huge,

and with its overwater nets and lounging sofas, it soon became our favourite place to watch the sunset. There’s plenty of choice when it comes to dining too. I’d recommend the incredible Asian and seafood buffets on Fridays at Longitude, as well as its á la carte international menu. We’d lunch at Sip Sip’s sunken bar with its fantastic pizzas, while Japanese restaurant Zen has a fun, lively vibe (and excellent dim sum).

The Leaf, perched above the organic gardens and accessed by a rope bridge, with its Mediterranean dishes using local ingredients, is perfect for romantic dinners. And don’t miss the Ice and Chocolate Parlour's choice of over 40 flavours of home-made ice-creams and sorbets (Strawberry-Pepper Sorbet for me!).

This being Six Senses, it goes without saying the spa was divine:

Amazing staff and giant, wicker-nest-like treatment rooms that merge marvellously with all the foliage. Try the Laamu Balinese Bliss treatment, a beautifully scented warm wrap of ginger, cloves and nutmeg.

But the highlight of our trip has to be our private picnic. Whisked by speedboat to our own magical deserted island (the stuff that dreams are made of, with talcum-powder-like sand, clear, turquoise waters and just a few extra 'luxuries' like a bathroom, sheltered dining area, a couple of loungers, and a few palm trees for shade), we were 'castaway' for the day with picnic hampers of beautiful salads, meats, cheeses, breads and fresh fruit to tuck into after sunbathing and swimming. Neither of us could remember ever having felt so relaxed. It's beyond romantic; in fact, we debated whether we'd ever be ready to leave!

Was this my best-ever Maldivian trip?

Well the staff were outstanding, and keen to make sure our stay was full of special memories; and while it's definitely not the most polished, or indeed the 'coolest' of islands, Laamu is certainly a truly incredible place. We can't wait to go back!"
