Like a phoenix from the flames Gili Lankanfushi is open once more after a devastating fire last year. EDEN Travel Director Nicky Edwards didn’t hesitate in whisking her hubby away on a romantic escapade to this much-loved, eco-friendly Maldivian paradise.

"Idyllic resorts with incredible Indian Ocean views from your bed are a dime a dozen in the Maldives...

But there's something pretty special and quite unique about Gili Lankanfushi; and those picturesque panoramas are just the start of it. It's the epitome of understated barefoot luxury without cutting any corners and, from the moment we were greeted by the arrivals team in Malé after which we hopped on-board 'Gili goes Cruising' for our 20-minute oceanic transfer, we couldn't help but embrace the 'no shoes, no news' concept.

Past guests will be happy to hear that, despite the necessary renovations, the resort has retained its rustic-luxe style and top-tier service...

The only really noticeable changes are the updated guest experiences and new design concept. All villas remain overwater but now come with custom-made furniture using up-cycled materials, open-air living spaces, roof-terraces and private decks with direct access to the lagoon below. They have most of the mod-cons you’d expect from a luxury island resort, though all are cleverly hidden so as not to distract from the magnificent sights and sounds of the ocean around and beneath your villa.

Private pools have been added to the enhanced Residence and Villa Suites for greater privacy.

And there's the welcome addition of some two-bedroom Family Villas designed with children firmly in mind; each with a private pool, a living room set over the lagoon and accessible from a safe walkway, plus an alfresco rooftop dining area. Speaking of dining, the options here are, unsurprisingly, top-notch: from 'By the Sea's' Japanese fine-dining feasts and the epic home-made ice-creams and sorbets at Fini Foni (the salted crème caramel ice-cream is outstanding); to the all-encompassing Kashiveli and the assortment of island settings for unique private dining experiences, including One Palm Island, named – yes, you guessed it – for its single palm tree.

The activities are just as compelling.

As well as non-motorised watersports (motorised options can be arranged from a nearby island), a tennis court and bikes for exploring, One Palm Island is a fabulous spot for snorkelling and the champagne Sunset Dolphin cruise is a must. There's a fabulous new four-day Surf and Spa programme too which combines the best of the Meera Spa and the Marine Biology Shack. And although there's no kids' club here, children are more than welcome, so it's a great option for families.

Your Own Mr/Miss Friday...

But what really makes Gili stand out – other than its blissful sense of escapism and sheer eco-friendliness (recycling glass, cans and food waste; filtering their own still and sparkling water; growing coral… even selling coral-friendly sun cream) – is the Mr/Miss Friday butler service, named as a nod to the resort's Robinson Crusoe vibe. On-hand throughout your stay to help with anything you may need, they are superb, discreet and oh-so helpful, so it's pretty much impossible to not to kick-back, chill-out and reconnect with your loved ones."
